After the arrival of the newest Polygon Strattos road bike line in early December 2021, Rodalink Singapore now has a performance road bike series from Polygon, the Polygon Helios series. This is the series’ comeback since its last release in 2018, providing a high-quality road bike selection for the cycling enthusiast in Singapore.
The Polygon Performance Road Bike
Identical to the title “speed chaser”, every road cyclist wants a machine that can help them perform as optimally as possible. This surely piques the attention of the bicycle manufacturer. Polygon Helios Road Bike is now designed to perform more optimally on slopes, be fun at high speeds, and be comfortable for long rides.
Cuts through Air Better: 24% Less Drag
The inspiration for the Polygon Helios road bike frame design is back to nature. “The air is the biggest challenge for every rider who wants to go faster. So, we conducted a test; how can we get good aerodynamics? And it turns out that raindrops are the answer,” revealed Zendy Renan, Polygon’s Chief Engineer.
How is that possible? According to research with computational fluid dynamics, a thin/sharp shape is not the ideal shape to get the best aerodynamics since it generates turbulence behind the bike. The answer apparently lies in nature: the best shape according to the research is actually a sliced water droplet shape. Thus, this shape was captured by Polygon’s research and development team for the Helios frame tubing. As a result, this design has 24% less drag compared to standard frames.
Properly stiff, where it matters
Power transfer is unquestionably crucial for riders who wish to ride on the streets. In addition to the shape of the tubing, Polygon attempted to optimize power transfer with various modifications including making the right chainstay much thicker than the left chainstay. The thickness is lowered where it is not needed, optimizing comfort and reducing the weight of the bike. Everything is designed as optimally as possible.
Designed with the rider in mind
Understanding the possibility of uneven roads and tortuous routes that might affect rider performance on the road, the Polygon Helios road bike series is built with moderate headtube stiffness (not too stiff, nor too flexible) to be more agile and responsive while also dampening vibrations from the terrain/road.
In addition, the Polygon Helios road bike is designed with tire clearance up to 32mm, resulting in lower rolling resistance for better cornering and steady handling. The Polygon Helios frame itself is lighter, which is approximately 878 grams unpainted; the lightest frame of all Polygon road bikes.
“When people hear about Polygon, they might be more familiar with our MTB. It’s true that we are quite strong in MTB because we have listened to a lot of feedback from athletes and cyclists over the years. Now we do the same; we listen,” said Veronica Vivin as Polygon Brand Marketing.
